JeffCo in Jeff City: Legislative Update

22 Apr
  • Reps. Jeff Roorda (D – 113th) and Elaine Gannon (R – 115th) voted for the tax cut bill on April 16. Roorda was the only Democrat in the House to vote for it. Last year, Roorda voted for and Gannon against the tax cut bill, which Governor Nixon vetoed. Nixon then went on a barnstorming tour to campaign against the bill, and Roorda and Gannon received much pressure from their respective parties. In the veto session, when the House tried to override the veto, Roorda switched to no and Gannon stayed a no vote. Nixon has already begun his anti-tax cut road show; how will Roorda vote when it is time to override?
  • Rep. TJ McKenna (D – 114th) voted against the gun nullification bill on April 3. All other JeffCo Dems voted for it. Last year, McKenna voted for a similar bill and received much criticism from the left. In the veto session, he switched to a no vote.
  • McKenna and Roorda voted for HB 1557 (page 16 at the link), which legalizes red light cameras in limited situations, on March 13. McKenna says he voted for it because he is against the cameras and this limits where they can be used, thus stopping them from proliferating at the city level. Other JeffCo representatives voted no. A bill to ban outright automatic traffic enforcement systems (HB 1976) will be voted on this week in the House. HB 1557, which passed the House, will be voted on in the Senate.
  • All JeffCo representatives voted against right to work on April 9.

Not mentioned was that Jeff Roorda changed his vote on the the 2nd Amendment Preservation Act, HB 436, with a gutless “present” vote after promising me not once, but twice in the weeks just prior that he’d vote yes to override the veto because “his Jefferson County constituents liked their guns”. So much for representing the people and the oath he swore to uphold.
